Seeing is not believing... its only "seeing"...

July 1, 2018

2 Corinthians 5:7 says “For we walk by faith, not by sight.¨

Hebrews 11:1 gives us a bit of a glimpse into what faith really is… The amplified Bible puts it this way: Now faith is the assurance (title deed, confirmation) of things hoped for (divinely guaranteed), and the evidence of things not seen [the conviction of their reality—faith comprehends as fact what cannot be experienced by the physical senses]. So, this faith that we’re to walk by has little to do with what we see… it lays claim on the unseen… the word “sight” in 2 corinthians 5:7 comes from the Greek word i’dos meaning appearance… we can’t let appearances or what we see dictate what we believe.

The problem with faith is… too often we internalize it instead of acting on it…

  • For many, faith is a belief in something… wether it be God or whatever else, but this isn’t actually a true definition…

    • See faith was never meant to be something we internalize and  just believe in our hearts or minds with… faith or Emunah in Hebrew is far more…

In James 2:14 we read: What good does it do, my brothers, if someone claims to have faith but does not prove it with actions? This kind of faith cannot save him, can it? 15Suppose a brother or sister does not have any clothes or daily food 16and one of you tells them, “Go in peace! Stay warm and eat heartily.” If you do not provide for their bodily needs, what good does it do? 17In the same way, faith by itself, if it does not prove itself with actions, is dead.

  • See, faith isn’t just something we just believe, it is something we do… its something we act on with that belief…

    • Take Noah as just one example…

      • Hebrews 11:6without faith it is impossible to please God, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him. 7By faith Noah, being warned by God about things not yet seen, in reverence prepared an ark for the salvation of his household, by which he condemned the world, and became an heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.

      • God told him he was going to flood the earth and that he was to build an ark…

      • Noah could have just believed for something, like maybe God was going to send a boat, or a boat building crew, but his Emunah… His faith… was more than an internal thing… it was a faith displayed in action…

        • He believed a flood was coming and he acted on that belief…

But here’s another problem with faith… The problem with faith is… too often we walk by sight…

  • There’s a story in 52 Kings 6:15The King of Aram was warring with Israel and one morning, The servant of the prophet Elisha had risen early and gone out, behold, an army with horses and chariots was circling the city. And his servant said to him, “Alas, my master! What shall we do?” 16So he answered, “Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” 17Then Elisha prayed and said, “O LORD, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.” And the LORD opened the servant’s eyes and he saw; and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.

    • The servant was a lot like us… we have a tendency to trade our faith for fear when the enemy tries to intimidate us… And we’re not alone….

      • The great prophet Elijah who called fire from heaven, ran away and hid in a cave because he began to walk by sight and not by faith…

      • Too often we walk by sight, but we are called to walk by our Faith in the Great I Am, not by the appearance of our circumstances!!!

      • So, to walk by faith, it requires “ACTING on THAT FAITH”, and it also requires that we don’t base our decisions on what we see!

What we see can be deceiving… “Seeing is “NOT” always Believing”…

  • All too often, breakthrough is just on the other side of opposition… but more often than not, people run when the going gets tough… when the enemy puffs himself up, when opposition arises, if our faith is only a mental belief, we’ll bail on the promise…

    • I want to remind you, if you’re experiencing adversity, if opposition and doubt are creeping in… hold on, because 2 Chronicles 2:15 reminds us “thus says the LORD to you, 'Do not fear or be dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours but God’s.”

      • And remember… people are not the enemy… he may use them, but people are our purpose… the enemy is subtle, but God is Mighty!!!

      • The enemy will do everything he can to get you to focus on the wrong thing… to set your eyes on the appearance of things, but faith acts out despite what the circumstances look like… just remember the echo of Noah’s hammer…

        • For 100 years, things didn’t look like they were going to change, but his faith rang out with every blow of the hammer as he built that ark… believing in the promise…

        • When we focus on what the natural eye sees instead of what the spiritual eye sees, we block what God would do in our lives

Church!  Do not walk by appearance… walk by faith and ACT ON IT!!!  Let your actions reflect what you believe
